Your Rights at the Police Station
If you are arrested or asked to attend a voluntary police interview, you have the right to a solicitor of your choice completely free of charge. This applies to everyone, whatever your financial circumstances.

Investigations By Other Agencies
If another authority (not the police) is investigating you, you might still qualify for Legal Aid. In these cases, your entitlement is usually based on your income.
Going to Court – How Legal Aid Works
If you are taken to court, we can make a Legal Aid application for you. The rules depend on which court is dealing with your case:
Magistrates’ Court: Whether you qualify depends on your financial circumstances and the seriousness of the case. Cases are assessed on your level of income, read more here.
Crown Court: Legal Aid is usually available for most cases, even if you were not eligible at the Magistrates’ Court. You may need to make monthly contributions towards your legal aid. If you have more than £30,000 in savings/ assets you could be required to pay contributions from this. If you are found not guilty, any money you have paid will be refunded with interest.
