Specialist criminal defence solicitor Michelle Canagasuriam, founder of MC Solicitors, has secured a significant outcome in a complex, multi-handed murder prosecution involving Class A drugs and allegations concerning a bladed weapon. Following detailed examination of the prosecution evidence and strategic defence representations, a guilty plea to manslaughter was successfully negotiated and accepted by the Crown.

The case, heard at Cambridge Crown Court, arose from a fatal incident near the River Nene in Peterborough in January 2026, which resulted in a drowning. The client was originally charged with murder alongside other defendants.

The prosecution alleged that the incident stemmed from a dispute connected to Class A drug dealing, involving the suspected theft of drugs and a mobile telephone used to operate a drugs supply line.

The allegations centred on a confrontation near the river. The deceased subsequently entered the water and drowned.

The proceedings also involved allegations concerning possession of a bladed article and formed part of a wider investigation into suspected drug supply activities.

The prosecution relied upon substantial and complex material, including CCTV footage, mobile telephone downloads, cell-site analysis, forensic and DNA evidence, witness testimony and police body-worn video footage.

The combination of multiple defendants, disputed criminal liability, serious allegations and extensive evidence required a carefully coordinated defence, detailed legal analysis and sound strategic judgment.

Meticulous Preparation. Strategic Defence. Significant Outcome.

The defence was led by Michelle Canagasuriam, founder and Principal Solicitor of MC Solicitors, who instructed Ruth Jones of 9 Bedford Row, London, an experienced criminal barrister specialising in murder, serious violence and drug-related prosecutions.

Michelle also instructed Justin Rouse KC, Barrister, King’s Counsel of 9 Bedford Row, London, bringing the expertise of leading senior counsel to the defence team.

Working closely with instructed counsel, Michelle directed the preparation of the case, carefully examining the prosecution’s evidence and ensuring that the client’s position was properly advanced throughout the proceedings.

The defence focused on the client’s individual alleged involvement, the circumstances surrounding the incident, the evidence capable of establishing criminal liability and the fundamental legal distinction between murder and manslaughter.

Following detailed defence representations and negotiations, the prosecution accepted a guilty plea to manslaughter, bringing the murder allegation against the client to a conclusion without a murder conviction.

The outcome underscores the importance of identifying the critical legal and evidential issues in serious criminal proceedings and advancing a clear, carefully considered defence strategy.
